DLL for Dal Niente Ensemble (2023) - 6.20 minutes - a music composition for flute, harp and clarinet, written for Chicago-based ensemble in 2023.
It uses generative score, which works with a special sonification library for minerals, produced in frames of a joint laboratory between the Music Department and Scripps Institute of UCSD, under the leadership of professor Lei Liang.
DLL (Deep Learning and Listening) plays with the principle of Deep Learning, which is used in the machine learning domain. I found a similarity in the way the attributed datasets are presented to machines and how similar datasets are presented to humans during the projective testing sessions in psychodiagnostics. At some point the attribution becomes a task for the machine. The same happens during testing procedures with humans. The same happens with performers in this piece.
So in the second part of the piece we listen to the latent space, created in performer's neural networks, which were trained in the first part.
